Design Exercise
AMC
AMC is the largest movie theater chain in the United States. Some of the cool amenities you’ll find at AMC: AMC Signature Recliners, expanded and enhanced food and beverage menus, including MacGuffin’s full bars and AMC Dine-In Theatres. Plus, premium presentation experiences like Dolby Cinema at AMC, IMAX at AMC, PRIME at AMC, and Laser at AMC powered by Cinionic.
With everything AMC has to offer, I would like to see them put more into their mobile app experience. While this exercise was focused on just the “See A Movie”, or landing page experience, I noticed a lot of things throughout the experience that could use some TLC, especially on the Accessibility front.
Some of the updates for this exercise include:
Included the AMC logo at the top of the screen, as branding is almost non-existent on AMC’s version.
Created multiple versions that have individual spaces for each movie. On AMC’s original design, everything seems to kind of run together between the background, movie images, etc.
Included a version with a white background, mostly to see how the contrasts worked in comparison to all the versions with dark backgrounds.
Updated the tab experience housing the “Now Playing”, “Coming Soon”, and “On-Demand” options. They’re now more easily findable and usable.
Reworked the interactive components at the top as well as the bottom nav bar to be more compressed. It was confusing to understand what the differences were between “Profile”, “My AMC”, etc., and which one you should go to in order to complete certain tasks.
A lot of work was done with the bright white color usage on type as well as the straight black used for background colors. I toned each of those down a bit to make the screen a bit easier to look at - this is common practice with heavy contrasts, especially for experiences that geet longer viewing periods.
